Calima Darien was founded in 1913; this beautiful and peaceful region has become one of the most important tourist places in the Valle del Cauca, there is Lake Calima, a beautiful water sports center, surrounded by Swiss style chalets and the most picturesque architecture nestled in the mountains.

It is considered one of the greatest tourist attractions in the country with the fastest third winds of the world and the first in Colombia during the year, ideal for domestic and international championships windsurfing, sailing and regattas held there frequently. It also has a ferry that crosses the lake, ravishing visitors with the landscape offering of country houses, mountains and lake. Its hotel infrastructure and diversity of typical restaurants, tourists guarantee an excellent stay.

The colors of the landscape, climate, clean air, quiet atmosphere, the surrounding mountains make this lake one of the sectors most Colombians visited by the domestic and international tourism.

Darien is also seat of indigenous cultures, such as: Calima, Itama, Yotoco, Sonso, Magdalena, Buga and Bolo.

Its population celebrates the Departmental Martial Band Contest "Canastero Calima" and Colombian Music Festival in March, further Corner Fair, Festival of Return in August and Sailing Championships and Winsurf. Admire there, the Archaeological Museum, the Church of Perpetual Help with sizes and Quito Viacrucis wood.

History of Calima Darién

The Calima reservoir known as Lake Calima is one of the largest dams in Colombia, with an area of 70 square kilometers. It lies between the towns of Darien (mostly) and Restrepo, in the department of Valle del Cauca. The lake is part of a hydroelectric project for generating power for the department. CVC (Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca) started construction of the lake in 1961 and ended in 1966. In later years would become a tourist attraction. So, they settled around, hotels, recreational centers and subdivisions.
